Report on Conducting Workshop

The 3rd Annual Washington DC Stake Conducting Workshop at the Washington DC Stake Center on October 13, 2018, drew the largest attendance in its 3-year history. 40 attendees participated in the parallel track, 4-class room workshop for music conductors of all levels and for beginning accompanists. This year, we were delighted that our newest instructor, Trevor Fanning, joined the workshop faculty, consisting of Melinda Baird, Rebecca Green, Helen Horton, and David Hardin.

At 9:30am, the opening exercises began featured President Kim Golightly, 1st Counselor in the Washington DC Stake Presidency, who reminded us of and taught us the importance of music in our lives as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This year, 3 classes (Awake and Arise! No more mindless singing; Dealing with Challenges in the Hymns; Make Ward Choir Rehearsal the High Point of Singers’ Week) were taught both hours. The other two classes (Accompanying ABC's; Conducting 101) were taught for one hour each. Afterwards, we enjoyed a very sumptuous lunch while networking with fellow conductors.

Statistics from the workshop are given in the Report on the 3rd Annual Washington DC Stake Conducting Workshop.

We thank each of the attendees for coming to the workshop, some who drove over 4 hours to attend the workshop. We are grateful to the instructors for their time and preparation and efforts in teaching the students. Finally, we thank the Washington DC Stake Presidency for their support and encouragement in holding this workshop. We look forward to the next Conducting Workshop.
